QUICK ANSWER

What Is PTE Writing?

PTE Writing is assessed mainly through two dedicated question types in the Speaking & Writing section of PTE Academic: Summarize Written Text and Write Essay.
Summarize Written Text tests your ability to understand and condense a written passage into one sentence, while Write Essay assesses your ability to develop and organise ideas in a well-structured written response.
Effective preparation should therefore focus on content, structure, grammar, vocabulary, form, time management and regular practice.

PTE ACADEMIC

What Is the PTE Writing Section?

PTE Academic combines Speaking and Writing in Part 1 of the test. The writing-focused tasks require you to process information and communicate your ideas accurately in written English.

Task What You Do Key Requirement Skills Assessed
Summarize Written Text Read a passage and write a concise summary. One sentence; 5–75 words. Reading + Writing
Write Essay Write an essay responding to a given topic. 200–300 words. Writing

Important: PTE Academic also assesses writing through integrated tasks such as Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation. These are located in other parts of the test, so your preparation should not focus only on the two dedicated writing tasks.

TASK-BY-TASK PRACTICE

PTE Writing Question Types

Understanding exactly what each task requires is the first step toward effective PTE Writing preparation.

1

Summarize Written Text

In Summarize Written Text, you read a passage and write a one-sentence summary that captures its main ideas and important supporting information.

What You Need to Do

  • Read the passage carefully.
  • Identify the main idea.
  • Select the most important supporting points.
  • Combine the key information logically.
  • Write one grammatically complete sentence.
  • Check your word count before submitting.

What to Practise

  • Finding the main idea quickly.

  • Using conjunctions and complex structures.
  • Maintaining grammatical accuracy.
  • Checking spelling and punctuation.
2

A Strong Essay Should

  • Answer the question directly.

  • Organise ideas into logical paragraphs.
  • Use relevant explanations and examples.
  • Connect ideas clearly.

PTE WRITING SCORE

How Is PTE Writing Scored?

PTE Academic uses automated scoring, with some responses also subject to human expert review before a final score is issued. Writing responses are assessed using task-specific criteria rather than simply counting grammar mistakes.

01

Content

Your response needs to address the task accurately and include the relevant ideas required by the question.

02

Form

The response must follow the required format and word limits for the task.

03

Grammar

Accurate sentence structures and appropriate grammatical usage are important for writing performance.

04

Vocabulary

Use vocabulary that is accurate, relevant and appropriate for the context.

05

Organisation

In extended writing, ideas should be developed and connected in a clear and logical structure.

06

Written Accuracy

Spelling, punctuation, sentence control and clarity all contribute to the quality of your written response.

Use the official criteria as your guide: practising repeatedly is more effective when you review why an answer works, not only whether it received a score.

How to Improve Summarize Written Text

The goal is not to copy the passage. You need to understand the relationship between the main ideas and express them concisely in one sentence.

Step What to Do
Read for meaning Focus first on the overall topic and purpose of the passage rather than trying to remember every detail.
Find the main idea Identify the central message that connects the important points in the passage
Select key points Remove examples and minor details unless they are essential to understanding the main idea.
Combine ideas Use a suitable sentence structure to connect the main idea with important supporting information.
Paraphrase carefully Use your own wording where appropriate while preserving the original meaning.
Check the response Confirm that the answer is one sentence and that the word count, grammar and punctuation are correct.

Key rule: Pearson states that Summarize Written Text must be one sentence and between 5 and 75 words. A response outside these form requirements can receive no score for the task.

How to Improve Your PTE Writing Score

Focus on measurable improvements rather than simply writing more essays. Review your errors and practise the specific areas that repeatedly reduce the quality of your responses.

Problem What to Practise Improvement Goal
Grammar errors Sentence structure and common grammar patterns More accurate sentences
Weak vocabulary Academic vocabulary in context More precise word choice
Poor organisation Paragraph planning and linking ideas Clearer structure
Off-topic content Question analysis before writing More relevant responses
Weak summaries Main-idea identification and paraphrasing More concise summaries
Time pressure Timed writing practice Better task completion
