What Is PTE Listening?
PTE Listening assesses how well you understand spoken English in academic and educational contexts. You may need to identify the main idea, understand supporting details, recognize words and phrases, follow a speaker's argument, complete a transcript or reproduce a sentence you hear.
The Listening section uses several different task formats, so preparation should not rely on one strategy. You need to understand what each question requires and practise listening, note-taking, spelling and accuracy together.

PTE Listening Test Format
The current PTE Academic Listening section is Part 3 of the test. Pearson lists eight question types and an approximate section duration of 31–39 minutes.

PTE Listening Question Types
The current PTE Academic Listening section contains eight question types. Each task tests listening in a different way, and some tasks also contribute to other communicative skills.
Summarize Spoken Text
Listen to a recording and write a 50–70 word summary of the main points and important supporting information.
Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
Listen to a recording and select more than one response that correctly answers the question.
Fill in the Blanks
Read a transcript while listening and type the missing words into the gaps.
Highlight Correct Summary
Listen to a recording and select the summary that best represents what you heard.
Multiple Choice, Single Answer
Listen to a recording and select the one response that correctly answers the question.
Select Missing Word
Listen to a recording with the ending replaced by a beep and select the word or phrase that completes it.
Highlight Incorrect Words
Follow a transcript while listening and identify the words that differ from the recording.
Write from Dictation
Listen to a short sentence and type what you hear as accurately as possible.
Understand Each PTE Listening Task
1. Summarize Spoken Text
You hear an academic recording and write a concise summary of its main points and important supporting information.
Focus on the central idea first. Take short notes while listening, then organize the important information into a clear response. Check your word count, grammar, vocabulary and spelling before submitting.
2. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
Listen to the recording and select all responses that correctly answer the question.
Do not select an option simply because you hear the same word in the recording. Focus on meaning and use your notes to compare the main points and supporting details.
3. Fill in the Blanks
A transcript appears on screen with missing words. Listen to the recording and type the words you hear into the gaps.
Quickly skim the transcript before the audio begins. Look for the topic and grammatical context, then concentrate on accurately capturing the missing words.
4. Highlight Correct Summary
Listen to a recording and choose the paragraph that best summarizes what you heard.
Avoid trying to read every answer option while listening. Instead, make brief notes about the central idea and important supporting points, then compare those notes with the summaries.
5. Multiple Choice, Single Answer
Listen to the recording and choose the single option that best answers the question.
Identify what the question is asking before the recording begins. You may need to listen for a main idea, specific detail, inference or the speaker's purpose.
6. Select Missing Word
The end of the recording is replaced with a beep. Select the word or group of words that logically completes the recording.
Pay attention to the speaker's argument, tone and context rather than trying to predict an answer from one isolated word.
7. Highlight Incorrect Words
A transcript appears on screen while the recording plays. Select the words in the transcript that are different from what the speaker says.
Follow the transcript carefully and avoid clicking words unless you are confident they differ from the audio. Incorrect selections can reduce the score for this task.
8. Write from Dictation
Listen to a short sentence and type what you hear in the response box.
Focus on remembering the sentence in the correct word order. Spelling is important, so use the time after the audio to check your response before moving on.
PTE SPEAKING SCORE
How Is PTE Speaking Scored?
PTE Speaking responses are assessed using task-specific scoring criteria. Depending on the task, assessment can include areas such as content, pronunciation and oral fluency.
Pronunciation
Focus on clear and understandable speech, accurate articulation, word stress and sentence stress.
Oral Fluency
Aim for natural pacing, smooth rhythm, appropriate phrasing and controlled pauses.
Content
Address what the task requires and communicate the relevant information clearly and appropriately.
How Is PTE Listening Scored?
PTE Listening uses different scoring approaches depending on the question type. Some responses are scored as correct or incorrect, while others can receive partial credit.

Trying to Remember Everything
Attempting to remember every sentence can cause you to miss the main idea and important details.
Writing Too Many Notes
Notes should help you understand and remember the recording, not become a full transcript.

PTE Academic is an integrated-skills test, so not every Listening question contributes only to the Listening score.
